The good news is we do not use tapes anymore. We record onto a hard disk (DVR) continually over a period of time depending on number of cameras and size of disk. Typically a 4 camera system will record in real time anything from days to weeks. The oldest being replaced so as there is no need to worry about the system other than making sure its turned on. You can playback in real time, freeze frames etc. Most DVR’s come with many functions but they all have one thing in common in that the picture quality is superb compared to the jumpy tapes.

All have backup/copy facilities and can be networked and viewed on the net if needed.

Cameras now come mostly low voltage so as the installing cost is less. They can be various picture quality depending on resolution. Do not expect a £30 DIY fixed focus camera to perform up to a 540 tv res Camera with auto iris and low light capability. If you have permanent good light and your subject is no more than 10 feet away then a cheap camera is good. If you want to see at night outside to watch say a driveway then you need the camera with the high spec and IR lights or you are wasting your money and will be disappointed. There are also cameras that use a radio link so there is no need for wires and of course IP cameras that have there own IP address so as you can log into them.

I understand that these 3 pictures were taken at night with a light level of0.03 lux. You can see with a standard camera the picture is poor and even with the second its not a lot better. Look at the bushes on the right. For domestic use there are many affordable good quality cameras available. You need to know what you want to see and in what light. Look at the area and get someone to stand at the furthest point that you want to see and do a rough measurement.
